I too hope the Common Room will be saved. The collegiality it offers is more important than ever.

I earned my PhD from UCD in 2010 and some of the most formative and useful professional experiences I had during my time there took place as a result of conversations in the Common Room.

The Common Room is a crucial social space in the Arts Block. It is a place where people meet and chat. Its also a great zone of interaction where you have great conversations with colleagues you might not ordinarily meet. It is a place to be treasued. The proposed moving of the common room elsewhere will result in the erasure of a community built over many years.

The manner in which it was decided to replace the UCD common room with a corporate-style club is as unfortunate as the decision itself. Both cast serious doubt over UCD's reputation as an organisation governed by respectful and enlightened principles of engagement. Even staff who rarely frequent the common room will have taken note of the controversy and of what it says about how UCD treats its staff.

The common room is a much cherished space within the UCD community, with a long tradition. Would be a disgrace to see it go, esp. since the new club will not be able to replace what will be lost.

Management's attitude towards UCD staff is becoming increasingly impersonal. The Common Room has been at the heart of the academic community for decades and taking away this facility will do serious damage to staff morale. Why are these rooms being taken over for class rooms if a T&L facility is being built?

Now retired from UCD. I was at the founding meeting and recall the emphasis on openness to all staff. It’s a great place for people from all disciplines to mix, including non-academic staff. The casual informality is essential.
