The academic staff of the College of Arts and Humanities deserve a space for social recreation that operates on terms that suits the academic staff.

The common room has been a mainstay of my professional life - I have made many friends from all areas of the university here over the years. Its closure is pointless and will not benefit anyone - its functions are quite different from the proposed Club - with which we can happily co-exist

A Staff Common Room greatly contributes to the exchange of ideas across Schools and the maintenance of an academic esprit de corps. It is good for morale, good for the dissemination of ideas about teaching, good for a healthy public sphere.

The Room is there for "only" 50 years or so but it imbued amazing air of collegiality, equality, history. It is classical - it is what it is and you cannot "replace" it.

The Common Room is a UCD institution; the decision to close it down represents a terrible blow against collegiality, inter-department contact and the sense of community within the campus. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Am one of many former Australian chairs of history at UCD. Am both puzzled and saddened by this short sighted and ultimately ridiculous attack on collegiality. Please do not destroy this important space.

I'm new, the common room sounds a great idea ,why scrap it ? for the formality of a swanky corporate thing where no one really talks, just swanning around feeling uncomfortable.

If those walls could only talk! the parties, the conversations... hugely inspirational and important. Have the big swanky corporate thingy but leave the Common Room alone-it's special.

The common room was always a place where I could enjoy some breaks, talks and meeting with my colleagues during my teaching at UCD.
It is a crucially important place in Newman for all the staff to get to spend some time together in a calming and inspiring environment! Don’t take that away!

President Deek's 'plan' will see a self-sustaining, member run establishment which fosters open academic discussion replaced by a white elephant. My fees as both a PhD student and a taxpayer are being wasted on an exclusive club whose only discernible purpose is to copperfasten the monetisation of the academy. I will not become a member if the so-called 'university club' in any capacity should President Deeks' scheme come to pass.
