The Common Room is a highly valued institution. Its friendly and informal character makes it a welcome retreat from busy university life. This is something that has grown ‘organically’ over decades. The spirit, feel and the relationships cannot be engineered. This is a home away from home for many staff and students. Its closure would be a deep and painful scar in the wonderful and colourful life at UCD

The Common Room was an important part of my life at UCD. I can't imagine what good can come of closing it. A very sad development.

I think for retired staff in particular it is a lovely resource. The payment for the new place could be prohibitive for many retired staff. Overall I think it would be a nice gesture to retain this much loved meeting place for staff of all ages and all grades.

During the year I worked at UCD (and also during my PhD studies) it was such a benefit to be able to join other staff and guests for stimulating conversation. It would be a shame if it was to be replaced by a more private and corporate club.

As a visitor of the UCD common room, I was welcomed and treated with respect. I also had a wonderful time there with colleagues and friends. I hope this would be possible in the future, in the same location.

Our common room is part of our tradition. It is a place for networking and sharing. Many ideas are created there. Many problems are solved there. Because UCD is growing ever larger please let us not lose this important way of communication.

During the five years in which I worked at UCD I found the Common Room to be a collegial environment for faculty and guests to continue intellectual discussions in a relaxed environment. It provides a haven on campus that is free from market pressures and run entirely through its own membership. It would be a significant loss to UCD to close the common room. May of the academic guests who visit do not wish to be brought to a corporate University Club but instead prefer the intimate, collegial, and ethically sound atmosphere that this wonderful space has to offer.

Keep the Common Room open. It is part of UCD's cultural heritage by now and it's run by staff for staff. The last of a homely friendly place to sit within a large university campus.
