Save the UCD Common Room!

I cannot believe that there is a plan to close the Common Room. It is a focal point for all staff being almost the only outlet that fosters cohesion among members and a sense of belonging to a wider academic community. Closing it would be a disaster for UCD.

I have been a member of staff for over 25 years and the Common Room has always been an essential social element in College life.

It is important not only personally but for the progress and quality of research that scholars of different backgrounds and experience have space to meet and share ideas.

Common spaces are always first to go when money is involved. Do the right thing UCD!

C'mon UCD- you are supposed to be about students!

The UCD common is the heart of the Newman building, an essential place for staff to meet.

This is a valued institution, managed by the members, and should not fall victim to the trend for the privatisation of services in the service of PR.

This is a space required by staff to collaborate and disseminate ideas. Staff can also bring students here to discuss their work in a relaxed setting. The common room also kindly lets our society borrow glassware for events.

Having both the Common Room and the University Club would meet a range of needs. The Common Room is a long-established part of UCD and should be retained.

The UCD Common Room is a shared communal space -- a type of place which is needed more than ever, in a world of growing privatisation and corporate take-overs of nearly all aspects of our lives. Having ownership and control of a communal space is important, and must not be lost.

It is really important that this club does not close, it would be a great loss.

Keep the Common Room!

The Common Room is the 'heart centre' of UCD.

Why are the powers that be trying so hard to alienate those whose work and commitment are vital?

This wonderful space needs to be retained as it is.

There is definitely room for both the Common Room and the University Club. Allow us to have the freedom of choice!

Articles, books, conferences, modules, seminars and much else of value began their lives as conversations over toasties in the Common Room. The Common Room is at the heart of our community at UCD. We need it to stay.
