Our daughter entered School 18 as a first grader. My husband and I have been genuinely amazed as we've watched her progress from rudimentary reader to seasoned book-lover, all in the course of 7 months. What an opportunity for her, and all of the Troy City schoolchildren, to be given the gift of an enormous head start on their future. The confidence that strong reading brings cannot be overstated. Please reconsider the decision to eliminate these essential teachers.

We CAN NOT lose our reading teachers! Our children need them. My son does not have an IEP but he struggles with his reading and if it were not for all of his reading help and school 2 , especially Mrs. Gregory, he would not be able to move to second grade next year. Especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing us to do online learning. She has done reading lessons with him 2-3 times per week with hesitation from the start of it all. My son will continue to need services for his reading next year and without these teachers, I fear, my son will lose all of his progress and be either left behind or pulled along and struggle throughout all of his schooling. Please don’t take away this department. It is probably THE MOST essential department in the district right now! Our kids can’t learn if they can’t read!!!!!!!

As an educator myself it is very important for children to be able to read. Teachers try their hardest to get all students where they need to be for the following year. All students are different and learn at different speeds and have different abilities. Some students need extra help and supports and now you are taking the support systems away from them to meet their needs! So sad!

My family spends time and money in Troy and want it to succeed. Strong, well-staffed schools are part of the way to do that.

It is the responsibility of all school districts in NY to offer children the best opportunity to succeed in life. Reading is essential for success in life. Eliminating remedial reading is an reprehensible decision. Schools are academic institutions and should pursue all academic endeavors. All sports programs should be eliminated first. Simply weigh the number of students who enter the workforce and the number of students who become professional athletes. There is an answer in those statistics.

Cutting an entire reading program? What kind of ignorance would spawn such a decision? Why would any child in today's world be forced to claw his way into an indifferent and amoral society without the most fundamental of skills with which to face the rest of his life?

Reading teachers give children one of the most important gifts they will receive. To teach a child to read is to open the world for them and reading teachers should be honored and not discarded. I urge you to reconsider your position.

Literacy is freedom. To dream, to think, to learn, to do, to have a considered opinion. Why would we want that kind of freedom for our children here in Troy?
