Reading teachers are critical to our childrens long term success. This is a basic building bloc for everything they do in the future. Common core made every subject so reading heavy that this is borderline cruel to remove this essential tool from pur childrens toolkit.

As a taxpayer and a retired 4th grade teacher, I find it unbelievable that instead of making cuts across all areas of the district, you would even consider cutting the reading department. Over 400 of the lowest level readers receive reading services. A class room teacher is NoT going to be able to give these students the individualized attention and program each student needs! Of those students, 65% are non white students. These students are the most at risk for dropping out, as it is. And now you want to double punish them and take away the 30-40 minutes a day that they have a sense of accomplishment!!!??
Find or make the cuts in each department. Lower the starting administrative salaries from next year on. Combine administrative positions. Return the mentor teachers to the retiring teachers positions . Don’t cut the reading department of the elementary grades!!!!

These kids need help and getting rid of the one thing that may help them is ludicrous in my opinion.

Reading is basic to all education. If a child can’t read adequately, they won’t learn much of anything else!

What could be more essential than reading, and the jobs and we’ll being of those teachers who work with kids to improve their literacy. Hard to imagine a more important social function. Find the money!

This is not the time for austerity and it is never the time to fire all reading teachers from a school district. An alternative must be found to close the budget gap. Everyone needs to call Governor Cuomo and the NYS legislature to stop rebating the Stock Transfer Tax to Wall Street amounting to $16 billion dollars every year, which would more than close the current NYS budget gap.

As a home owner and tax payer to the Troy school district I am angered by this proposal and ashamed to have city and school officials that would support it.

Please don't cut the teachers. Schools have more administrators than they could ever need. Cut administration. School is meant to teach children.

As an educator in the district, I know how valuable our reading teachers are. I understand the need to make budget cuts, but it shouldn't be like this.
