The Townsend Estate is one of the most unique Historic Properties in New Haven. It's position in Fair Haven Heights makes it even more of an historical gem. The City should 'BUY IT NOW' before it sells for double!

The city needs to consider it’s historic beginnings as a base for it’s future. It would be wonderful to see this used as a mini “farm” using original style farming tools & methods as an example of a very small scale interpretive living history museum complete with at least some recognition of the role African Americans may have shared in it’s success which could be utilized by schools & private citizens. The library alone would be an excellent place to focus on some of this as well as the documented history of the area that Deb Townshend herself researched and published. Organizations such as the DAR could perhaps be approached to help contribute to it’s upkeep in light of it’s historical significance and as a place to meet and/or present programs. There are so many legitimate reasons to preserve the entire estate it would be a travesty to see it developed or worse, razed in the name of “progress”. Look to Europe; the preservation of history in it’s buildings and records is an important part of what makes it special. Right here in our city we have several pieces of the early history of this country if only we preserve it.

Keep the grounds the way they are! Turn it into maybe a bed and breakfast and maybe have weddings there etc. without destroying the ambience of the estate. Shame on the Townshend family for not trying to keep it in the family for generations to come. How fast some things change when the parents die whether it be something like this or something like when the mother at Sally’s Apizza died shortly after the place was for sale you don’t think the younger generation was going to work like the older generation. Shameful.
