The Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi is in need of help! What was so hot in the 80's and 90's has become an eyesore to everyone who visits and lives in the Corpus Christi area. Left with only one mall, the Sunrise Mall has given up and is now given over to new management and owners. This petition is raised to get The Sunrise Mall named an historical landmark due to the movie which was shot there in the 80's, "The Legend of Billie Jean", featuring Helen Slater, Christian Slater, and Keith Gorden. Back in the 80's, the movie was shot all over Corpus, including a popular runaway scene which was filmed on the escalators in the mall. Looking back, that was the cool mall, the mall everyone shopped at, and the mall everyone built the memories at. Orange Julius, Corn Dog 7, Aladdin's Castle, and so much more. Just because something is dead, does not mean it should be forgotten. We need to give our mall the life it once had! By signing this petition, it will make Mayor Joe Adame believe that we DO care about our mall, and just because of the circumstances, we don't think it should be destroyed!
Mayor Joe Adame :
"Thanks for your message and passion for the Sunrise Mall. The mall went into bankruptcy and is in need of change and a new business plan. Trying to keep the mall the way it once was in my opinion is not feasible. The new owner needs to pay the mortgage and expenses and it will take a new look and retailers to make this happen Sorry but I do not agree with your idea.
Joe"
In the movie, Billie Jean fights against adults to prove kids have a voice, FAIR IS FAIR, lend your voice and help save our memories!
The response from the community has grown beyond what I imagined. It is exhausting to face such cold dismissals from those in power but seeing this momentum keep building proves that our memories are worth fighting for.
