If there's no danger, no need to remove them..if they are diseased, then please go ahead..but replace them..it always added to the beauty of the stadium, vs. Marysville or Oakmont, that those trees were there

I'm an alum, why cut down beautiful trees? Especially considering climate change and the carbon they sequester.

Pine trees don't need to be thinned, as one person posted. Pine trees need to be in clusters, they withstand the strong wind as a group; a lone pine tree would be toppled during a wind-storm if the others, which acted as a buffer collectively, were to be removed. Once again, I will say, that there should be quite a few Doctors of Forestry from UC Berkeley, let's get a few of them involved on this matter of pine trees on an educational campus.
Consider moving the track into a tree-less area? Perhaps that's a better solution.

Update today from NUHS Principal Dan Frisella, on the Hooper Stadium trees, in case you haven't seen this yet...
Good Morning,
It sounds like people are getting questions about trees from students and potentially the public. The Union published a letter to the editor this morning with some misleading and inaccurate information, so, I wanted to pass on some facts about the situation, so that you can respond to questions accurately.
1. Significant damage was done to the old track by a number of tree roots in the stadium, which prohibited the use of the two outside lanes for competition.
2. While resurfacing the track this summer (a $200k project), part of the project included cutting through the base layer of the track to remove portions of tree roots in these areas.
3. The district contracts with an arborist who has been involved in our tree mitigation plan for the past three years. He is in the process of identifying which trees may cause potential damage to the track within the coming three years. We have identified trees within close proximity of the track for the arborist to assess. He will include his evaluation of these trees in a revised tree mitigation plan, to be completed by next week.
4. Next Friday, September 4th, the arborist, Paul Palmer, and Karen Suenram will be in the Science Lecture Hall to present the plan and field questions and concerns. All staff and students are welcome to attend.
5. There is no plan to cut down ALL the trees in Hooper Stadium...
Hope this helps clarify... we are working on the best plan!

In these times of climate change, it is hard to believe that still there are people that do not understand the importance of save as much trees as we can and it is even more difficult for me to accept that some of that people are right here in Grass Valley, where it is supposed exists a community notoriously responsible and respectful of the nature. The discussion should be around how many trees are we going to plant instead of how many to cut. Whatever reason may exist for wanting to cut the trees, a decision with such impact should not be taken by a closed group of few people and a contractor but it should involve the community that have the right to be informed and the right to expose its concerns. Rather than try to protect only the track, I would like to care about our habitat as a whole. Hopefully we all can stop this absurd, ridiculous and tragic idea of cutting the trees. Honestly, I don't want to be here to witness a crime like this against the nature.

I think there's more to the story here so I will not be signing this petition. It was at an arborist's suggestion that they are even considering cutting these trees down. Something tells me that an aborist isn't going to be trigger happy about cutting down the trees they work to preserve.
Please consider that they might be thinning trees because of a fire danger, or they be preemptively removing them before the school's brand new track starts rising and buckling due to an expanding root system.

Barring any possible danger arising from the trees staying I say don't cut em!! We are slowly paving our entire world over. The last thing we need is LESS trees! Consider the children involved & the benefits from said trees. Thank you :)

I was appalled this morning when the news to reach me that Nevada Union was considering cutting down the tall pines around the stadium. I absolutely think this is a giant mistake and implore you to please reconsider. Part of what makes our community so charming is all of the trees.
