A peaceful lovely garden that is always uplifting to the soul. As a supporter of the Smithsonian Institution, I urge the Institution’s Secretary to re-consider the South Mall Campus Plan so that the Haupt Garden and surrounding architectural and landscape features are retained.

This is a beautiful space. When I worked a block away, I would sit on one of the benches and enjoy the tranquility. It let me escape the stress of the office and recharge my internal batteries.

We need to preserve SOME things!! Not everyothung needs to be "new" and "updated". This garden is a walk back in time. A much needed secluded green space.

When I was in office just up the street at USDA, a short stroll through the Haupt Gardens was often what I most needed to clear my head and to step away from the day's pressures. Now that I'm retired and living in Reston, I still can make an occasional retreat there, and it's always high on the list of places I take out of town visitors so that they can have a clearer picture of "monumental" Washington. My husband and I are long time supporters of the Smithsonian.
While there is often a need for change, it is important that components of the Smithsonian's essence should not be sacrificed as change for the sake of change.
The Haupt Gardens, as they are, provide and important connection of exterior formal and semi formal space to the whole dynamic of The Smithsonian on the Mall. The Haupt Gardens being outside are as important to what The Smithsonian does inside.
The Mall already provides the non-formal mall space which as is being proposed by the $2 Billion renovation which includes the removal of the Haupt Gardens.
These funds, the $2 Billion, would be better spent on the existing Smithsonian buildings and programs the Smithsonian delivers to the public and taxpayers.
The retention of the Haupt Gardens is important to the whole dynamic of The Smithsonian as a diverse institution.
Please Keep the Haupt Gardens so that The Smithsonian will not discard a small treasure enjoyed by the people.
