The Enid Haupt Garden is my favorite spot on the Mall. It is beautiful, has historic elements and honors a lady who gave this country so much. As an American landscape designer, I question the choice of a Danish firm to decide such a project so important to the American people as well as the design itself and its context to the history of our country and the ability to fit in with its surroundings.

This garden is a wonderful spot. Why must a renovation be planned that destroys this gift to the people? It is a beautifully conceived space as it is now.

This is just another example of the Smithsonian's utter disregard for the public. All it wants to do is build monuments to itself, without taking care of the existing infrastructure.

I am shocked the Smithsonian would consider replacing the current garden, a gem in the city, with a design that is so out of context to the Castle and Arts & Industries buildings. This area deserves a garden more in keeping with the whimsical design of these buildings. The current garden is one of my favorite places to visit on the Mall. I love the plantings, the sculpture, the water features. To destroy this with a featureless lawn area is beyond comprehension. I urge you to reconsider any plans to change this fabulous garden.

What is it with architects and their hatred for gardens? Please do not mess this beautiful garden up with inappropriate and ego-driven claptrap.
