The Smithsonian gardens and outdoors areas are the reason why the Mall is such a beautiful place, and the exploration of these unexpected oases in the middle of an urban centre are why children grow up loving DC. They certainly have my heart.

Please do not get rid of this beautiful garden! It is a lovely, walkable space with color and life, both of which will be removed by the strange and intensely ugly space currently in the plans.

The Haupt Garden at the Smthsonian has been one of my favorite spots for a relaxing stroll and a visit to the neighboring Freer and Sackler Galleries for many years. The Garden has long been a high point when I have taken relatives and friends for a tour of DC, and it has been the site of more snapshots of them than any other site. Do not sacrifice this beautiful, peaceful site for more of the intrusive, comercialized, and even ugly development that is currently being inflicted on our city.

I was born in Washington and have enjoyed the garden since I was small - now an academic in Oxford I constantly boast about the beauty of the Smithsonian gardens. Do not alter this space!

Please don't destroy one of the marvels of the Mall. There are always other ways to accomplish the redesign without ruining some historical and wondrous parts. Many, many people do not like sleek, modernistic and inhuman vistas that destroy the soul of a place.

I've been through the Haupt Garden several times. It is simply lovely and one of the best "formal" gardens I've seen. The structure, plants and surrounding architectural bits are of great beauty in a city that has too many plain, blocky buildings and cookie-cutter, dull plantings no different from shopping plazas. Please save the garden!
