As a frequent visitor to the Haupt garden I protest the idea of changing this lovely garden to reflect the cold, unfriendly and very unappealing plans of Mr. Bjarke Ingels. As for
the problem of enticing visitors to the Sackler and African Art museums this could be better address with better signage on the Mall and accepting that few families with children will have any interest in visiting these regardless of any of your plans to entice them.

I'm a professional landscape designer and I'm VERY opposed to the destruction of this beautiful garden. All things new are not better. The garden as is presents a beautiful vista from Independence Avenue of the original Smithsonian Castle. Put your bathrooms and food sales in the Centennial Building that no one seems to know what to do with. Do not destroy this garden to install something that is fine but unremarkable. Preserving historic gardens is just as important as preserving historic buildings.

I work in Washington, D.C., and I've found the Haupt Garden to be a wonderful, quiet spot to visit before work and during lunch breaks. I also have great memories of time spent here with family on visits to D.C. growing up. I urge the Smithsonian Institution to work with stakeholders and community members to find a solution that addresses the SI's concerns about accessibility and visibility while protecting and safeguarding this beautiful garden that has been a respite for so many.

Enjoyed by so many people, Washingtonians and visitors alike, this garden should be preserved just as it is, with the Carlhian designed garden pavilion museum entrances and the Ripley Center chinoiserie garden folly entrance, as they are all elements which combine to create the lovely experience.

I recently read about the plans for renovating some of the Smithsonian buildings and grounds. I have frequently found visitors taking pictures within these gardens for their keepsake. I also enjoy the gardens during my lunch breaks. These gardens provide a tranquil preserve that visitors, residents, and workers can savior. I hope you will take due consideration of these special environments. Like with music, it is as much the silences between the notes that creates the full effect.

The Enid Haupt Garden is one of the most beautiful spaces in Washington, DC. It is a brilliant concept and reflects the genius of Dillon Ripley who was one of, if not, the most important Secretaries of the Institution. It was during his tenure that the Institution, as we know it today, was largely formed. He sought to build a campus of learning and research and not just a collection of wonderful museums.
The Haupt Garden provides spaces to meet and gather and relax for the visitor and staff alike. I would urge that this plan be reconsidered. Obviously the roof of the museums underground need repairs and these must be done but I would submit that the Garden should then be reinstalled as faithfully as possible to the current design, complete with the architectural elements and the Renwich Gates.

I'm a retired Smithsonian employee. I LOVE the Haupt Garden and the three pavilions by which one enters the Freer/Sackler, the Museum of African Art, and the Ripley Center. What are you people thinking?
