I live in DC and always make it a point to go through the Haupt Garden when visiting the museums on the Mall. It's always a welcome respite.

The Enid Haupt Garden is one of the most beautiful spaces in all of Washington. The new plan does not fit aesthetically with the Victorian Castle. I understand the need to fix the leaking roof. I most emphatically do not agree with replacing the garden.

It's not clear whether or not this garden area would still be named the Haupt Garden. Nevertheless, the design changes would render this space into something entirely different from what Mrs. Haupt substantially funded, not reassuring to future donors!

The Mall needs a breath of fresh air and green space desperately. Please don't dishonor the name and gift of Ms. Haupt. I fear that this will have a deleterious effect on soliciting future donations to the Institution. Why should a donor make a contribution if they know that it will be trashed for expediency's sake?

Please do not do this. The gardens are a place of beauty, a sanctuary and a meeting place. We need touchstones like these in and around our great capital city.

This is one of the most beautiful and serene places in the downtown/Mall area of DC. It is certainly an oasis and should be saved for the next century if not millenia!

For nearly 30 years I have lectured in and led Smithsonian seminars and tours in the U.S. and abroad, and have witnessed the creation of the beautiful, memorable Enid Haupt garden and the elegant entrance pavilions to the new museums beneath it. To destroy it would be a wanton act unworthy of the Smithsonian. DO NOT DO IT!

To lose that beautiful gift Enid Haupt gave us would be a travesty. There is certainly a better solution to the Quadrangle's underlying problems!

I watched today's eclipse from the Haupt Garden, a glorious, peaceful refuge from the overcrowded Air and Space Museum. Let's hope the Garden is still there in 2024 for the next eclipse!
