This proposal is a travesty. The balance of the gardens - Haupt next to the Moon Gate - with the elegant entries to the Sackler and African Arts museum provide a major public gathering space for people of all ages and interests.

The garden has a special message. It offers respite, a place to imagine that an orderly, verdant world still exists. Beauty is painted with patterns of plants familiar and beloved. It is all human-sized and possible. If you take out the garden, please recreate it after the work is completed.

The garden is both beautiful and new. It is irresponsible from an environmental perspective to build and destroy every thirty years. Structures should be maintained, not changed to meet a passing fad.

The Enid Haupt garden is too lovely, too iconic, too in keeping with the Renwick "Castle" to deserve destruction to create the swervey space proposed. Dig it up for underground construction if you must. But restore this gem as is, please.

I have already written to you saying I am so upset at the prospect of getting rid of the Enid Haupt Gardens that I haven't renewed my membership! You obviously have way too much money if you can build all these fancy buildings! Shame on you!

The garden is a welcome refuge from the crowds and large empty spaces on the Mall, plus it preserves the character of the Smithsonian. Please don't demolish it.

Please save the Haupt Garden, Renwick Gates and walls. These are important features with historic value, and they are beloved by the citizenry. Please do not spend $2 Billion on this master plan. Go lean, go small, preserve the existing features, and save money!!
