This garden is one of the historical gems of DC. As an institution that looks into preserving the past, the master plan should consider the iconic landscapes that make up the Smithsonian Campus as part of that mission.

The Enid Haupt Garden is an important historic landscape and a beautiful and contemplative garden. As a neighbor and frequent visitor to the garden, I urge the Smithsonian Institution to reconsider recent plans to redesign the garden and instead ensure that it's historic architectural and landscape features are retained.

Can't imagine replacing the garden with the proposed design. When I worked at the Dept of Energy that was my view from my office. I was a joy to see the garden every day and to watch it change with the seasons. Hopefully it will remain for future generations to enjoy.

The existing garden is beautiful, peaceful, and fits very well with the historical buildings around it. The proposed replacement is cold, soulless, and industrial as well as jarring against the historical buildings. Why would anyone seek it out?

Please don't destroy this beautiful space. The current gardens fit in perfectly with the historic nature of the Castle and surrounding buildings, where you can wander peacefully through many little garden areas. The new open, modern concept clashes terribly, and allows no room for intimate gatherings in small garden rooms.

As one of the first fellows of the Woodrow Wilson Center my office was in the castle. And I admired the later development of this garden. It would be a terrible act of destruction to demolish such an oasis of beauty so near the vast but relatively barren mall.
