I make a point of visiting the Haupt Garden whenever I'm near the Mall to relax and refresh my mind. It's one of the Mall's genuine treasures. Its as vitally important to the Smithsonian as any building or collection.

What would be better than this garden? Perhaps a high end gift shop to sell plastic trinkets and t-shirts? Does the Smithsonian have to monetize everything?

This garden is both a pleasant spot to spend a lunch hour and an important part of the aesthetic integrity of the south side of the National Mall. It should absolutely be preserved.

Save the garden!! It Is so beautiful and offers a restful respite from all the business of touring the Smithsonian. The eyes can rest, the air smell beautiful and it is just as important in an urban environment as another building. The mall was originally design as a green expanse from the Capitol to the White House. Don't over develope. Leave us our garden.

I have paraded many tourists through this garden. I have also spent many lunch dates with my husband in the garden. It is a very special place as it has flowers and gardens and art from around world. It is filled with nooks and crannies for a peaceful escape from the daily grind. I have also walked through the garden many of times alone, after work, decompressing from the long day working for the federal government. In the 14 years I have lived in DC, there is no place else with such peaceful diversity and quite opportunity to escape the city. Finally, I've spent much time watching the Smithsonian botanists and gardeners carefully tend and design the spaces. Year round! Destroying flowers would be a crime against nature.

What an inexplicable proposal to destroy a wonderful space that belongs to the American People? I'm really shocked at the audacity of SI officials who believe they could execute such a betrayal. We demand accountability: Who approved this project? Who is the COR? Let's look to see who benefits from this shady deal, and ensure that the process is fully investigated. The Haupt Garden is quiet and beautiful treasure, and to destroy it would be an unforgivable crime.
