I had no idea that the plans for a renovation of the Mall included the removal of the Enid Haupt Garden. That's a terrible idea! This garden is a graceful element among this complex of Museums and a lovely place in itself. Please, hands of the Haupt Garden!

I love the Enid Haupt Garden and want to see it preserved. It is as important as other items in the Smithsonian's collections.

Since moving into nearby Maryland my wife and I have been supporters of the Smithsonian. True, it took us a while to get over some of the financial abuse but we re-uped our Associate Membership again and again. (Though things have gotten less member friendly recently.) Regardless, the beautiful and serene Haupt garden is an essential part of the Smithsonian and a wonderful quiet oasis amidst the hurly burly of DC. I beg you not to crap it up with some bean counter's scheme to "upgrade" this beautiful entrance with some buildbuildbuild temptation. We are losing our meaningful past needlessly, mindlessly and we won't get it back once it's gone.

Losing the Garden & the gates would be a real lose. The proposed design looks like so many other treeless, more arid landscapes. Not a good solution. We need MORE trees — summer gets awfully hot & shade is needed.

As a supporter of the Smithsonian Institution, I urge the Institution’s Secretary to re-consider the South Mall Campus Plan so that the Haupt Garden and surrounding architectural and landscape features are retained.
Plus I really enjoy walks there during the day as a break from work. It would be extremely unfortunate to lose such wonderful green space in the sea of buildings that is Independence Ave SW.

Upgrade, if you must, but don't destroy the Enid Haupt Garden, the existing entrance pavilions to the National Museum of African Art, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and the S. Dillon Ripley International Center; and the Renwick Gates and Walls at the south edge of the Haupt Garden to do so.
