The Enid Haupt Garden was a delight when it opened in 1987 and has remained so for 29 years. Landscape and garden design deserve more respect than the destruction of a beautiful and delightful space. DC is too short on delight as it is. Respect it, keep it, enjoy it.

In the heat of summer this oasis is a God send. It is also lovely under snow, with cherry blossoms by the Sackler moon gate, and in fall with colorful plantings.

The Enid Haupt Garden is a showcase to which I always take out-of-town houseguest, and a place of beauty and refuge that I enjoy on my own regularly. Implementing the Smithsonian's proposal would not only destroy this place of beauty, it would deter potential future benefactors, by making clear that their vision of their legacy at the Smithsonian would be vulnerable and ephemeral in the span of a mere three decades.
