I first started going to The Smell when I was still in high school & lived in a different county, and over a decade later there are still so few venues quite like it — always affordable, all-ages, and inclusive toward young people — the area. The Smell is an integral part of the local DIY music & art scene, and has been for almost 20 years, and it would be a damn shame to lose such an important cultural institution that has done so much for so many people.

The choice between a nationally significant cultural mecca and a parking lot seems like an easy one to me, but it's not mine to make. Here's hoping LA decides to preserve a little bit of it's history.

I'm signing this because The Smell is one of the most important pieces of LA culture - from the past and recent times. Subculture is what keeps a city attractive and alive!

The smell has inspired so many people, so many generations at this point. The city needs to recognize what is important to its community, and the smell should always exist as a safe haven for music loving youth and the adults who grew up there.

I spent my high school years attending and playing an insane amount of shows at The Smell with my old band, Plague of Dandelions. The fact that somebody wants to turn such a cornerstone of the LA 00's music scene into a parking lot is simply baffling.
