I have never been to 'The Smell' and in all likelihood I never will. I live in England, and only know this venue through the artists who have emerged from it's nurturing environment. Artists such as Busdriver and EMA have played there. It is, to my understanding a space in which artists can take risks and survive. Such spaces are needed. You weaken L.A. and America's soft power by removing them. Each Busdriver or EMA that reaches these shores is a reminder that America can be human and intelligent. It helps to counter the view that America has given itself over to Christian Fundamentalists, gun nuts and racism. For the sake of America's image in the eyes of the wider world, I would encourage you to rethink your decision to demolish this venue, or at least generously compensate the owners, so they can continue their fine work elsewhere.

The smell is a safe environment where people can express themselves in an appropriate matter and bands can be heard. It's difficult to be living that dream and proceed with it but the smell is a great place to do such thing. Please don't shut it down.

This place is important not just for underground music but also as a safe, creative space for youth.

When there are so many all-ages venues in the greater Los Angeles area closing, why not protect a non-profit landmark?

I have never been able to go to this venue but one day I want to perform there. It seems like such a legendary venue and I don't want to see it go. At least let me believe that I have a chance of playing at The Smell.

A truly awesome and safe place for people to gather and listen to music that has inspired a lot of us to go out and make things happen. Los Angeles needs to keep places like this as part of our identity.

Please put community above profits. As Los Angeles grows and changes, we need to maintain some sense of what has been and will always be vital to any real community.
For the love of art and music
Save The Smell!!
