Don't do it! This place is a place of creative community. Young people come here to meet and inspire each other. Do not send them elsewhere where they might turn to drugs or violence. Peace bwu

The Smell is an important local venue that has contributed immensely to both LA culture and the revitalization of DTLA. Tearing it down would be a crying shame.

The Smell is bigger than just L.A. Chicago artists have continued to visit and be supported by The Smell while looking to find their footing for a national audience. Without venues like The Smell, there is no where for artists to gain support. The Smell and DIY venues nationwide need the support of their cities and communities to foster the artistic side that make up the vibrant fabric of a city's neighborhood and identity. They are not profitable ventures and DIY venue proprietors cannot fight moneyed interests like developers on their own. I oppose the action to demolish The Smell because I oppose the stamping out of communities integral to the success of our cities' struggling artists in favor of corporations making a profit.

The smell is much, much, more than the neighborhood spot. It's been an essential mangrove for the modern west coast aesthetic to develop. In any respectable retrospect of the artistic movements of the early new millennium, the Smell will have its own chapter, wherein an impossibly scattered community was brought together to make an earnest attempt at a greater artistic statement, regardless of age or material means. Its progeny have, through this platform, shaped the city's voice in the larger American artistic identity, and in doing so, altered the history of the surrounding neighborhood and greater Los Angeles Area for the better. It's not for just the fight for the good music—it's the fight for the good city, that's why places like the Smell deserve a shot at outliving the machinations of parking-lot peddlers.

I love the smell. the smell was the venue where I went to my very first local rap show in LA and how I found out about the rest of the local rap and hip scene. I have made so many friends here and seen so many great shows. it would really break my heart to tear it down. :o(

I've never been to The Smell, or LA, but I know that it's very loved by everyone who has performed, or gone as an audience member. It would be very sad to see it go.

As a teenager in NJ, I was still aware of The Smell as a place that welcomed and fostered unique art and music. As an adult I have gotten to see firsthand just what a relevant platform it offers artists that aren't bound by convention and pre-existing categorization, and how many kids and adults it offers a safe place to see live music.
