I walked through the John Vartavos where CBGB's used to be and it broke my heart. Places like The Smell absolutely matter. Downtown stayed relevant because of places like The Smell that kept operating there.

I've never been to the smell but it is an iconic venue. CBGB's, Gilman st., the smell. Tearing it down would be such a waste of an important cultural hub

All-ages volunteer-run music venues such as The Smell are an invaluable avenue to guide young people towards societal integration, and future goals and careers. If it weren't for organizations like The Smell, I wouldn't have pursued my current career as a sound editor for films and TV. The ever-growing greed of commerce should not so easily usurp the small cultural landmarks of this great city. Shame on the owners of this building, and on the city of Los Angeles for their short-sightedness to approve the demolition of this important venue.
