The Smell is a rare venue: an open and safe place for adventurous music lovers to witness musicians' experiments. Both performers and audiences are willing to take risks, and that is entirely due to the atmosphere of trust, curiosity and cooperation that inhabits the space. The Smell is a unique musical landmark that has shaped the Los Angeles musical landscape as powerfully as the Whisky, the Masque or the Troubadour. I've had several musical epiphanies there, both from the audience and from the stage. Thanks Jim.

The Smell brings so much life to LA. It shouldn't go.

Private property is like venom to community projects and creativity.

Destroying the Smell is destroying a community, a haven, and the arts.

The smell is dear to many people's hearts, especially the youth of this city who can't see a lot of live music due to age restricted venues. Please, I beg you, save The Smell!

The Smell is one of the only venues in LA that still fosters community. When you're a 16 year old kid who loves music not every show is open to you, but The Smell is an all-ages haven that's volunteer-run and affordable for everyone. Damn the man, save The Smell!

The smell is an amazing venue. So much fun and wouldn't want it to go so soon

The smell has always been a place of great entertainment. Having attended many shows over the years, I've come to appreciate the vast and loyal community who both represent and attend this venue, whereas many other local venues do not offer such a luxury. It would be a shame to see those who have brought joy to others forced out for something than can be resolved through negotiations.

Keep this venue alive for current and future musicians alike! I have been hoping to play here in the near future and still plan to, along with the many others who want to get an audience, this is the place to start.

The Smell has been a vital part of non-mainstream music in LA since the late 90's, and this particular space, at this point, is iconic.

The smell is a very important venue that supports a community of music in a safe environment. The fact that it's being turned into a parking lot that offers up nothing to the music community is a shame.

I've been going to the Smell since 2004 when it was the only reason people would venture out to downtown LA. Before it was gentrified and had restaurants and bars, the Smell was the only safe haven for me and my friends and we'd pay to see new bands play, usually for $5. I was introduced to so many bands and styles of music that I never would've known about if not for the venue and Jim Smith, who dedicated his life to helping musicians and music fans have a home in the ever growing music scene in LA. To demolish this place to make it a parking structure would be a crime against artists and spaces devoted to All Ages shows. The Smell adds significant cultural value to our city and it should be allowed to flourish.

I feel this is also a historic building as it used to be an old cinema. I also vote to keep the downtown independent and five star

This place has more deep routes in LA culture than most places considered to be landmarks
