Save The Smell!! From Seattle, I'm 35 now but have seen many amazing shows at the Smell, including The Gossip, Chromatics, and White Mice. We need venues like The Smell to keep music alive!

The first show I ever played in Los Angeles was The Smell - it was an experience that will never leave me. The Smell is the rare kind of venue that can truly create new art forms, new futures, and new ways of being. These kinds of venues are worthy of being preserved - they are integral to our creative communities and to the sounds and ideas generated by them. The Smell provides a platform for new artists to experiment, to perform for friends and strangers alike, and to forge bonds between people. Culture doesn't need more signifiers of a lifestyle that many can't afford and can't even afford to dream of: atomized luxury apartments, plate glass stalls of manufactured garbage. Culture needs artists and volunteer-run spaces like The Smell.

The smell and other venues in this building are so integral to Los Angeles art and culture. It would be an absolute travesty to tear it down.

I first encountered the Smell by performing at the original location in 1999. It was small, narrow, and instantly recognizably special. When it moved to Main St. I was a little worried. As a Los Angeles native, no longer living in the city, I was wary of moving it downtown. But, when I entered the doors, I was instantly relieved – and optimistic. The Smell, once it moved to Main St, became more than a special space, it became an essential space that can not be overstated. The Smell is a unique space in America, the rare kind of venue that can foster an entire arts scene; and if you look at the trajectory of downtown now, for better or for worse, an entire revitalization of unwanted space. Please take a moment and really think of the cultural significance of The Smell, it is so vital to people not only from LA, but around the world.

don't let my home away from home get torn down by some absurd parking lot company! let's give The Smell and it's community all we can to show what it has given us, be it musician, artist, barista, student, magician, body trainer, security guard, actor, geezer, nomad, lover, or lawyer.

The Smell is a space of creativity and freedom that defined my adolescent experience. There are so few places in L.A. where people of all ages can meet and express themselves in safety and solidarity. It is a beacon of the city's music and art culture and it should remain there for future generations.
