Destroying the planet and upsetting the ecosystem by culling everything that moves is not the answer. The deers can go to a sanctuary if need be. Man is the most arrogant species on this planet!

It is sickening that because of idiots our forests and virtually all other habitats have been decimated. It is sickening that all the naturally occurring apex predators, such as the wolf, and landscape engineering species, such as beaver, have been extirpated. But we are now left with what we've got, and what we've got is dysfunctional. Deer are forest-dwellers whose populations should be kept in check by predation. When predated to the appropriate numbers, a balance is achieved in which, with reduced browsing, forests are able to regenerate. This is not the case now. We have almost no regeneration whatsoever because of the explosion of numbers of deer due to lack of predators. It is absolutely essential that deer numbers are reduced, and shooting them is by far the most humane method. I will accept that many of the genuine but ignorant people who oppose this action might be vegetarians and would never sanction the death of an animal for human food, but I suspect that many happily eat beef. So I will ask, how does the life of one ungulate weigh greater than that of another? This is arbitrary morality at best. Be in no doubt, I am an animal lover. I am soft and sentimental. I still cry when I watch 'Bambi'. But the natural world, when it functions properly, is a horrorfest of trophic webs which determine species population numbers. And when it becomes dysfunctional due to human stupidity, the answer is not maintain a stance of stupidity, but to act positively to restore functionality, and to save the ecosystem; to save ALL the animal AND plant species. This is reality. It is visceral. Those who actually make the decisions based on science (established, peer-reviewed, universally accepted science) are the true animal-lovers. It's one hell of a tough call, but they are acting for the good of all species. Those who let their hearts rule their heads in this most important of fields, have no place in conservation.

There are many other options open here. Why dont they take advice from a Deer specialist. Roe will naturally jump a fence so if its over 6' all they need to do is drop one section and they will leave of thier own accord. Definately no need to be culled for no reason.

"cause themselves serious injury in doing so" - Even more serious than what you're going to do to them?

Absolute disgrace, it would only take a handful of people to herd them, a fence guy to "open" a section of fence and about 2 hours of time to do it. Or have Sellafield got something to hide???
