Please leave the tree alone. If its dying, it deserves to just go on its own. Put a barrier around it if you feel a branch might break off.

It would be a shame on you to cut down this tree, it is alive and healthy, prune if necessary but to cut it down is a sin against nature.

I came to Sierra Vista this spring as a tourist. I am a birder, so the San Pedro house held specific importance to my itinerary. This tree was a center piece of our discussions all day and we were lucky enough to see a Western Screech Owl roosting in one of its many cavities. This tree is not just another cottonwood. It helps capture people's imagination about the beautiful cottonwood forest habitat that is along the San Pedro river-a very special habitat that needs as many champions as possible. Please reconsider cutting this treasure down. The money spent on the crew to cut it down could go into funds to help build a nice fence to keep visitors safe and still allow them to bask in its magnificence. As a visitor to Arizona, these experiences are the root of why I spend my dollars in these towns. Don't take away another economic development tool from Sierra Vista.

This tree has a long social history, and is an important part of the San Pedro House, and for Cochise County as well.
