The mascot does not demean Native Americans. It actually gives a tremendous sense of pride to represent Watertown. The mascot symbolizes pride for those who represented it as well as paying homage- no one from Watertown would ever belittle Native Americans as they symbolize our strength and pride.

i was born and raised in watertown didn't go to watertown high but always knew the mascot as the red raider my mom brother and sisters all went to watertown high. It should stay that way.

I strongly urge to keep the red raider logo being one back in the day,the tradition needs to carry on for old and new-its a logo not anything else!

As I recall, from an earlier attempt at Changing our Red Raider Mascot (over 30 years ago), a proposed change did not prevail.
The issue, then, was not centered around the a racial issue, but rather around the issue that the Raider was carrying a Tomahawk, and that he had an angry face, and that that depiction was deemed as negstive and innapropriate.
For years, our same Raider Mascot was then depicted without a frown, and without the Tomahawk.
After, Many versions were used in the High School Annuals, and on other documents with the Rsider depicted playng the piano and doing many other positive activities, like carrying a diploma.
I was one of those artists, who designed, and re-designed images of our Red Raider. I was asked by school officials to do this, beginning in 1961. These images uere used for Annuals, events, etc. , and for several reunion promo materials including invitations for the Class ofv1959 and 1963.
Actually, during my senior years 63', I was chosen to paint real faces of thoselrepresenting our Mascots. I have that photo in my 1963 Annual.
As a professional artist, I do think that the proposed graphic image, shown above, is wonderfully executed. It would look perfect as a tea shirt, and for many other purposes. Why, instead of a Tomahawk, our Red Raider could be shown introducing the image, or at an easel painting this image.
Stretch your imaginstion.
However, I strongly believe that our mascot should stay in tact, and should always be depicted in tandem with any imagery that used.
That is my opinion.
So, be it. I am looking for some of the images in my archives. If I manage to find them, I will share.
