One sign of a healthy community is its simultaneous ability to preserve and invent its culture - that is, to conserve its history and heritage while developing new expressions for current times. Many times the concept of preservation is interpreted as stagnation when in fact both heritage and history can be the basis for advancement. It is also usually the history and heritage of a place that give it character and resonance. That is what I see in the Parks Building. This building has a story to tell, stories that can be collected, conserved, and celebrated...That will ultimately contribute to Dahlonega's cultural vitality and its heritage and history. This is what makes Dahlonega so special.

Historical buildings create a sense of place. The parks building is an example of the type of building that reflects the towns mining history and separates one mountain town from any other mountain town. If you lose this building, you lose more of the towns character, its sense of place. Visitors come to this town for that very reason. If you give up your identity, you give up your uniqueness. Then, visitors will just go elsewhere. Please spare this building for the sake of your history, your sense of place in beautiful north Georgia.

Please do not allow an historic building like the Parks Building be torn down. There are far too many buildings being destroyed. It must be stopped. We must preserve our town.

I saw a campaign like this work in my hometown to save a 19th century house. I hope this is successful as well.

Don't take the easy way out. Don't cave to local money. This is an historical building. Preserve it, even though it might cost more. It will pay more dividends in the long run.
