Murphy's Island is really a (highly polluted) peninsula - the eagles roost in the tall trees at the tip of the peninsula. The number of eagles depends on ice cover on the lake - in years with lots of ice, there has been over 30 eagles. The Loop the Lake trail would go across the base of the peninsula, but the county wants to make a smaller loop within the peninsula, extending along the shoreline to the eagle roost. Their reasoning? To maximize the use of the Onondaga Lake shoreline within the city limits for the benefit of city residents. Absurd. The county must consider carefully the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act--by definition the eagles will be disturbed. The draft mitigation plan being developed is full of inaccuracies and impossibilities and can't be settled by Dec 5 as it would require years of research.
I stress that the Loop the Lake trail does not have to include this shoreline loop on Murphy's Island and that there are serious legal ramifications to disturbing these eagles.
Thank you

I am opposed to the extension of the creekwalk to the shore of Murphys Island. It is possible to allow for recreation for the people of syracuse while at the same time, leaving important wildlife habitat like this site, undisturbed. It is nothing short of a miracle that we are able to have these beautiful birds living here alongside us. Make the right decision and ensure that they are here for many generations to come,

You need to give the eagles their space. They are very important to all. We have plenty of paths to recreate on. They have only a small area they need. Respect our most cherished wildlife. Respect Murphy's island.

Onondaga County resident. I am opposed to the Murphy's Island trail unless access is prevented from 12/15 to 6/15 to allow for protection of the eagles nesting there.

Bald Eagles were nearly lost by the 60's from NYS and the Nation. Restoration is occurring, but it wasn't until 2007 when they were removed from the Federal Endangered Species List.. and Eagles remain listed as Threatened in NYS AND monitored until 2027. We should take the extra precautions needed to fully see species make a recovery. Given the history and contemporary climate, we really need these things in place and support. So here is my support.

Watching the wonderful displays by the many Bald Eagles which have been roosting at Onondaga Lake has been an absolute delight over the past several years. We should be doing everything possible to preserve their roosting habitat. This is what the lake restoration is about. Let’s not ruin it.

I'm a registered voter for onondaga county and I don't like this plan one bit! I love the creekwalk but there surely is a better place to put it. There is so few beautiful things about stinky onondaga lake, lets keep this part intact.

The eagles wintering on Onondaga Lake have become a major Syracuse attraction and should be protected.
