My mother also graduated from Newton HS class of ‘49 and this would be a tragedy to her family, the Bixlers who had 5 daughters who were Newton Braves!

It is very easy for someone who is NOT Indigenous of this country to support the mascot. The word "brave" is an English word that has no meaning to Natives. We, as Indigenous People, did not call our warriors "braves", that is a made-up concept by the movies and romanticized books. My husband graduated from Newton, he supports keeping the mascot with the exception of cultural education of the People of this part of the US, I disagree with him. The mascot you have is a Pawnee man's way of wearing their hair not the Lenape or Ramapo tradition. (The Pawnee are not from this part of the country.) Your idea of what a Native person should look like has been molded as a stereotypical Plains akicita (warrior), i.e The Oceti Sakowin AKA The Sioux Nation. The ridiculous song that is played during high school games comes from a Western movie, and again, that is not how We sing. When I see a non-Native person wearing a headdress, it sickens me because to that person it is a costume, to me, it is a sacred item only worn by men and women who have earned the right. It's another example of cultural appropriation. Why is it so important for people of this community to keep the "brave"? I believe you fool yourselves into thinking that imitation is the best form of flattery, but it is not and never will be to me and most other Natives.
