I always thought the mascot showed reverence and admiration for the Native Americans who lived in the Newton area long ago.
I think the suggestion to remove the Brave name and logo is ridiculous.
It’s time for some elected officials to be brave enough to show common sense in the face of the PC mob.

Keep the name braves, but have the mascot be an American Soldier, not one of the Native Americans that we killed off in order to clear the land build our high school. It was not meant as a tribute to those Sussex County native American warriors and civilians who fought and died gallantly to defend their hereditary land by killing European American soldiers and civilians, but unfortunately lost. NHS does not wish that the Braves had won that war, and that this land should still belong to them - so yea it is a little racist. Just saying...

Going to school games our mascot was never perceived in a racial manner. It was considered a symbol of pride. Please don’t change it.

The Indian Brave. Always a respected sign of strength, perseverance and undeniable unity for Newton High School. These children have lost so much this year please help us save their school identity. Their school pride. Please allow Newton High School to remain as the “Home of the Brave”. Thank You!

This is getting ridiculous. Maybe all teams should get rid of their mascots. Maybe I find using the cougar as a mascot offensive.
