Instead of just banning words that offend the ignorant, wouldn't it be better to use this opportunity as a learning experience and teach the students (and the Town of Newton) about those who were here before us. Afterall, a school mascot should have some significance, some meaning, and whether you like it or not, the Ramapough, Nanticoke and Lenni-Lenape Indians are our local history. Over the years as I watched many a Newton football game, the phrase on the side of the school “Home of the Brave” (besides filling everyone with pride as it is the last line in our National Anthem and is always song quite loudly by all), has always made me think about whose home this was in the past. And that they were no less brave or proud than us. So, if we’re going to be “Braves” then perhaps it’s time we learn a little about their history and culture. Perhaps if you contacted the local Tribal Councils (yes, they still do exist) they may find the idea of interest and would be willing to share that history and heritage. So YES, let’s keep the name Braves and perhaps the visage of the "Brave" can become more than just a facade that adorns our school and something of which we can all be proud.

No Native Americans would ever find this offensive. American Indians are proud of having these logos supporting their heritage. Yes I know for a fact. Get these local “Karen’s” out of here.

Keep the name and lose the image of the man. Use the Eagle feather as the logo if that is the symbolic meaning of the Braves.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "brave" as "having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty: having or showing courage." Does that sound at all offensive? No, in fact, being called "brave" is an honor; therefore, the name Braves honors the Native American community for their courage.
The term "brave" doesn't have to refer to Native Americans. It can also refer to the American soldier, law enforcement, firefighters, other first responders, and anyone who performs acts of courage.
