The building of the high school was delayed because of WWI.... a war that was fought for your freedom by the military sacrificing their lives. And THIS is what we have to deal with now? Disgraceful.

I am a graduate of Newton High, class of 89. Also I have a son who is 1/3 Native American and his father has no issue with the Braves name

Save the Brave! If someone is disstisfied, their names should be made public. Probably not even someone local. I feared this would happen. Its ridiculous.

I cannot believe the board of education is even considering changing the name. This is taking it way too far and if the BOE succumbs to changing the name then shame on them!

The school mascot is meant to honor and is by no means racist.

Absolutely ridiculous! Native Americans are a proud people. They are known as being brave. This is not racist. This is a term of respect.

I graduated in 1977. My dad graduated in 57, mom in 60. my brothers graduated in 80 and 87. I have been involved with the school still to this day. The "Brave" name and symbol have never been derogatory or demeaning in any way. The brave is a symbol of strength, perseverance and positive attitude. It has always been a dedication to those that were indigenous to this area. I am, and have always been, PROUD to be a Newton Brave!
