As a former voice instructor at NU, I am appalled that the university is considering this move. The music program was around for many years before I got there and it should continue this legacy. The evolution of this program since I was there is amazing! The shows/musicals are outstanding and I have several former voice students who attend/have attended NU and excelled in the program. In fact, I have recommended that a couple of my current students consider NU because of the music program. If you take this program out, you are depriving them not only of the wonderful faculty, but a wonderful experience. I can’t tell you how many times a student would tell me that they participated in music because it was fun and stress-free unlike their other classes! Also consider something that no one else has mentioned: students graduate from high schools with thriving music programs, and although they may not want to major in it, they won’t consider a college without a music program because it’s not something they are willing to forgo. These programs have shaped who they are and how they process academically and artistically. They will likely look elsewhere if you have no music program for them to participate in. I think it would be a grave mistake for the university and it’s recruitment to end this very public program!

This was a blessing to our son who never sand in high school. This built many friendships to last through years. It was therapy for stress of classes. It helped my son come out of his shell. Plus they do so much for the community and college.

The Newman University choir played a big role in my short time at Newman. It allowed me to develop a sense of belonging and community at the school. As that is what music is meant to do, to bring us all together in fellowship and joy. The music department is extraordinary and it would be absolutely devastating for it to end.

Music education is an essential part of our schooling, regardless of age. Music is one of our world’s greatest pleasures, a beloved pastime, and brings people from all backgrounds together. Cutting Newman’s Music Department would be an incredibly asinine, ill-advised, and straight up stupid decision, and I hope whomever thought this up as a way to further whatever personal agenda they’re following can find something in the cold, dark spot where their heart once was and realize how foolish they are.

The brain's capacity for music is older than its capacity for language- makong music together creates oxytocin, the hormone that bonds us together as a community. Music is vital to our humanity, and we need to train a new generation of musicians to use it to bring hope and healing to this world! Don't cut the program!

Cutting the music program from any school no matter how large or small is a travesty. Music is vital to our culture, education and humanity. It's a vital part of RELIGION!!! Imagine what Mass would be like without music. Newman should do the opposite and add money to the program. Set a good example for schools everywhere
