Music is essential for life, and at Newman. Please do not make this decision. It will be incredibly difficult to ever bring back the program if you do.

Music is an essential part of the human soul. An integral part of the Catholic Mass is music. It is said that to sing is to pray twice. To get rid of choral and instrumental music from any university would be detriment to the core of its function, especially a religious university. Music is the only activity that utilizes each part of the brain simultaneously. It has the capacity to communicate emotion, technicality, rhythm, and story. Without music, human life is devoid of expression. Please save this department. Professors Zogleman and Pracht have worked extensively to share their compassion and joy with their students and the community. This department must remain intact.

The Newman music program is the only reason I have ever been on the campus of Newman University. I have sent several of my music students to Newman to study and participate in the music program. I am appalled that this is even a consideration.

From a future music educator’s standpoint, the fact that cutting the music program was even in question hurts my heart. Cut your math class. That’s what it sounds like to me. Music is so much more than singing or playing songs. It is connecting with history, emotion, theory, and a sense of community. Absolutely ridiculous.

The music program at Newman University has made me who I am today. I am more confident, outgoing, and sociable than what I was. It has transformed my life. Taking this away is a disservice to all of the future students who may come here. Universities should help students grow, not just teach.
