Thanks to my Fine Arts/music education at Kansas Newman College/Newman University, I have been equipped to serve as music teacher, organist, pianist, guitarist, choir director, composer, Director of Music and Liturgy. and substitute teacher. How many students and worshipers may have learned or been supported by the skills I learned at Newman I do not know. The legacy of Sister Mary Xavier Lampe --and that of other music instructors as well--needs to continue.

This would be a shame. This would be like cutting the heart out of the university.

This is a no-brainer. All of the Arts and Humanities subjects enhance higher learning and cognitive function. The music staff at NU are talented, beyond dedicated, and consistently create high-quality productions with the students. As a former NU staff member, those are primarily the kind of events for which I return to campus.

The arts teach so much beyond their syllabus. Confidence, public speaking skills, poise, and so much more. Don’t do this to your students!

Music is so important. And this is a liberal arts college. It needs a music program. The Newman Music Department always puts on amazing performances. This is such a terrible decision. I can’t even comprehend it.

It's one thing not to have majors in certain areas, but for a liberal arts college not to offer some music curriculum and musical performance opportunities for its students is short changing the college and community. I don't know if this action is reversible, surely this will cost the college much more than they project saving.
