Music is so important in a well rounded education. Those who study and perform music make it possible for so many people to enjoy it. Music emits feeling and emotion and all people need help to experience it. Don’t deny your students a music experience.

Music is a celebration of life. We sing and dance in glorious rejoicing! As a Newman alumni, this would be an enormous loss to the school, as well as to all of the community. Please reconsider this decision and make the right choice.

The arts are not frivolous! They are a NEED! They are the study of our human existence. Please consider what this would do to our human culture as a whole! What message are you sending to the students, to the faculty, and to the larger community?

What a travesty to remove music from a Catholic university. Keep the richness and beauty our world needs. Don’t cut the music programs!

A well-rounded education is not just a focus on one's major. A good scientist, physician, engineer, politician, or human needs to be able to use their left and right brain. Whereas language and analytical skills are primarily focused in the left brain, fine arts, music, and creativity are generally found to be centered in the right brain. Most research institutions are realizing the importance of developing creativity and self-expression in their students. It would be a shame if Newman took a step backward in this regard.

As a parent of a current Newman music student and as a twenty-three year music educator I find this alarming. From a parent perspective, Newman is mostly Science majors and they have to prove they are well rounded to be accepted into medical school, vet school, and or nursing school. The music department provides a source of well rounded proof that the students need to be accepted. If they get rid of anything that isn't science, the student's acceptance rates will go down. The music department provides scholarships to help students attend the very expensive university. The music department is well known in the community providing entertainment for many functions on and off campus, hosting music festivals for the Patriot League, housing Kansas Ambassadors of Music camp rehearsals before Europe trips, and inviting high schools to perform with them on concerts giving them the opportunity to see the next level. The elimination of this program will affect many in the community and leave a large hole. Students in music form close bonds and make life long friendships because music is so personal and you have to be vulnerable to open the emotional side of music. Those friendships aren't as close in other areas. The arts provide a way to use the right side of your brain which helps balance all the left side sciences. The arts teach compassion which is a foundation of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. The namesake of the college Cardinal Newman wrote music. The Catholic liberal arts university is more closely tied to music than to the sciences they boast. Why should we be straying so far from the original intent of the university? Please reconsider this extremely bad decision.
