The word Indian is NOT offensive; no more than the word European. Indians today call themselves Indians more so than the PC Native American.
Let's list some facts.
Napa is the INDIAN word HOMELAND. It was named by the indigenous tribe.
So, if you say that the mascot is racist, so is the NAPA name.
Redwood Warriors (Indian)
Justin-Siena Braves (Indian)
Napa Indians (Indian)
Silverado Dons (Latino)
See any theme there?
Now let me throw another idea:
If you get rid of the Indian because it offends someone's delicate sensibilities, you need to also get rid of the Vintage Crushers as it incourages alcoholism.
Napa has not ALWAYS been about wine. Before wine, the area was planted in prunes.
We need to preserve and learn from our history; not discard it because some PC snowflake is offended by it.
Lastly, read the rest of the comments. A HUGE percentage say thay are of Indian decent and they want to KEEP the mascot.
The school board needs to tackle and solve real issues. I am sure there are better ways to spend $4 Million.

I have one question for those that consider using Indian as our name/mascot deragatory: In the context of Napa High School, where Indian has always been used in a respectful way, why would you want to erase such a proud and wonderful name ? I always was impressed, awakened, excited and motivated when I heard the yell of "Let's Go Indians,Let's Go" or "We are Indians , Brave and Strong." These words not only motivate , but beyond this, hearing this may even spur others to pick up a book and truly learn why Indians were/are brave and strong. You will take this wonderful possibility away by deleting Indian from the name of Napa High. Please consider carefully...

There is NO reason to change the long standing tradition of being a Napa Indian. All three brothers and sisters attended and graduated from Napa and our mother Betty Ryan worked in the cafeteria for 20 years. It would be better to change board members and cheaper.
