It's time to remove this antiquated equipment, improve the boating navigation and prevent further Manatee deaths. The waterway system behind the lock is no longer on septic systems, with some proper planning by the city, further storm runoff can be minimized with projects that prevent direct discharge to the canal system. With the increase of Salinity in the spreader system, Oysters can establish new colonies, proven to be one of the best natural water filters.....

I live on the canal and have to boat through that lock to get out. Since the lock has been broken, in an open position, the water quality is improving. The locks are not save for boaters or manatees. They need to be removed.

Two days ago a pontoon boat got lodged sideways in the canal. The force of the incoming tide pinned it against the walls. This lock needs removed not only for the safety of manatees, but before a human life is lost! It is extremely unsafe!

For the good of the manatees and the mangroves, and the ease of boaters, please remove the lock.

Remove the lock..... this lock does not provide any separation of water from the rest of the river water or the other canals water flow on the East side of this lock. There is no change in water elevation either when passing through this lock. When boaters attempt to move through the lock in both directions it causes severe back ups along with dangerous conditions with boaters trying to jocky their boats with the currents from not hitting other boaters. Each day when the volume of boaters trying to come from the West side of the lock back up to wait access to get to the River you can see up to 30 boats at a time waiting to get out & in the afternoon trying to get back in to the West side of the lock. This lock has caused a very unsafe restricted waterway passage for all boaters & after all the studies that have been concluded, there is no difference in the water on the West side of the lock because all the water flow has been coming into the West side of the lock from the East side for 40 years anyway.

I live on the South Spreader near the lock and agree the lock is a hazard for the manatees and boaters. It's also a hazard for the dolphins that come through the lock and have witnessed dolphins having difficulty getting back through the lock. I also agree the water quality has improved and the depth of the water has not increased with the lock being open since the hurricane.
