Save the Mahogany Trees at the Honokaʻa County Park

I think repaving the parking lot is a better idea than cutting down these beautiful trees!

Large canopy trees are important to an established ecosystem. Healthy trees that are not causing current inaccessibility should remain. If a native species that grows a large canopy and doesn't have the same lateral root issue can take the place of these mahogany, the couple of problem trees should be replaced by those species. The trees currently planted seem to be targeted for their use as a material in art or furniture. They were not planted in this park for the purpose of harvesting for a profit at maturity. All of the salvageable materials removed from this park should be set up to be sold for use with all the profit put back into this very park's recreational enhancement. Accountability for all the actions of our county/state in regards to our public spaces and tax dollar spending. Community should have been notified and included in the discussion prior contract bidding.

Please do not cut down trees. I live on maui but visit this park on Big Island and love relaxing under the trees. It keeps the island cool and beautiful. It is home to many birds and insects. Please reconsider

Against cutting the trees

The extent of the damage and inconvenience of these trees existing does not outweigh the proposed lost aesthetic value to the park. Hawaii island country has removed well over 100 significant mature trees in the last two decades from our parks and yet I have not seen but 10 replacements, most of which are not botanically nor aesthetically interesting or appropriate, not well maintained. Until this country supports better arborists with a positive vision for trees in our landscape I oppose any tree removal except those determine significant safety hazards.

Save the trees!

There must be a way a skilled arboririst can care for the trees without cutting down old growth trees. We should not take the lazy approach by mass tree cutting. There has got to be a better way to manage.

This removal plan needs to be reevaluated to ensure only the removal of trees that are currently causing damage or are an immediate safety hazard

There are better ways to mitigate liability issues than to remove this many healthy shade trees, and a lot of the community probably considers the trees more valuable than hard-surface parking. I encourage the county to use this park as a case study to develop management that better balances public safety/liability concerns, environmental value, and the needs of the community.

I have no idea why you’d wanna cut down a tree I traveled the world and anywhere where the trees are honored. The space is held with dignity.

Stop cutting down the trees and paving everything. Trim as needed and just maintain the pavement.

Healthy, beautiful, mature hardwood trees are more valuable to our community, and indeed the world as a whole, than two paved parking lots. Save these trees! Make new ugly stupid parking lots away from them if you have to.

I think the public would prefer rather to drive on a lumpy parking area than bake in the sun and have no shade.

Storm erosion, mitigating climate change, increasing biodiversity, strengthening communities… These are just a few things mature trees do for our world and communities and you want to destroy that over a few parking stalls?? Nah gotta come up with a new plan.
