Save the Mahogany Trees at the Honokaʻa County Park

These trees are beautiful and provide shade in the park. Please let these trees live their lives.

My research says each mature tree is worth about $50, 000 in board feet. I agree, follow the money!!!

With the amount of monies needed projects and infrastructure changes - you cannot justify the money you will spend in cutting down something the community wants. You cannot keep doing things “for the community” when the community does NOT want it. That park needs bathroom renovations- sidewalk repairs- the gym needs an overhaul- there is NO reason to spend any money cutting down trees the community wants.

Please don’t cut down all the trees. Take a pause, reassess and see which few need to be removed that can be replanted with ohia and other natives. Leave some of the old trees while the natives get established. I used to be a park ranger, and went through the UH Hilo master gardener and Forest stewards program. A good plan would be divided into phases to that would support saving the parking lot, preserving shade for the community, and offering the most holistic ways for new trees to get established. Everyone can win here if the county takes a pause and reconsiders the plan.

Keep the trees. Oahu sucks cuz there are too many homes and many perfectly good trees and other plants have been lost to idiots who can't see things in the long run.

Please consider saving all old growth trees even if not native especially if they are not negatively impacting native Hawaiian species

As usual, the Hawaiian government is acting like stupidity is a virtue! These trees add to the beauty of our island home. These are the same imbeciles that permitted the killing of the red-headed parakeets because they were predating on a limited number of coffee trees. Their excuse was that the parakeets were not indigenous.....as if coffee trees are!!! Maybe we should direct county employees to consider cleaning up the litter, fix the parking issues in Kona and resolve the homeless problem in town!
