Closing the courts is not the way to go. Our community has been hit by several other closures and this one will hurt many MacEwan staff and students as well as the general community.

Publically funded fitness facilities throughout Edmonton and surrounding areas have systematically caused the closure of many private squash courts. They have not opened enough courts to supply the demand but have provided inexpensive fitness facilities that have taken all of the fitness customers away from the private enterprises that are not financially viable without the support of general fitness customers.

These courts have the highest utilization rates. It is not logical to cloae them.

In a notice sent by Grant MacEwan Board of Governors dated January 27 / 2014 to members of the Fitness facility, it is indicate students/members are “demanding add to the overall experience” at Grant MacEwan fitness centre.
However there is no mention within the notice that states students are “demanding closure of the squash courts”.
Furthermore, Grant MacEwans very own students initiated this “Save the Squash Courts” petition.
In saying so much, this ominous decision to close these squash courts and eliminate an entire sport at this fitness facility is very perplexing.
Squash is well established at Grant MacEwan. Not only should these courts remain open but serious consideration should be given to construct more at this facility.

Please do not destroy the effectiveness of this highly valued public recreational resource. MacEwan University has a duty to avoid wasting public tax dollars which have already been expended and invested towards a particular capital investment. Taking four squash courts, constructed at a capital cost of easily $80,000 per court, and throwing that use away, only to replace that use with another but less costly use, is a serious waste of capital. I am astonished that apparently rational managers of public resources appear to be poised to behave so recklessly.
These are the only affordable courts in central Edmonton. It would be a shame to lose these courts.

I'm surprised that a facility dedicated to sport and wellness would make a decision that negatively impacts so many people. Those are more than courts, they are a community of players and the home of many tournaments. Surely another venue can be found for a yoga or spin class??
