Of all places we need the sport of rowing, or any other sport come to that, it is within the comprehensive school movement.

Please do not bring to an end an activity in our school that I have witnessed helps form our boys to be men for others.

A state school with a boat club on The Thames - fantastic. It would be madness to close this facility, all the dedication by the students, all those early mornings and weekends, all wasted.

Whatever the real reasons fot the governors' mysterious determination to destroy one of their school's most impressive claims to fame, it seems clear that the LOSBC can and should be saved. This is important, not just for the school itself, but for the wider world of state-school sport, in which it has provided inspiration and hope.

The study recorded the Leaving Certificate scores and sporting participation from 402 school children graduating from an all-boys secondary school in the Republic of Ireland during the period 2008-2011. Sports participation was assigned one of four categories: Rugby; Rowing; Soccer; No Sport. RESULTS: Participation in a sport during the Leaving Certificate years conferred a 25.4 point benefit to the final Leaving Certificate score. However, participation in Rowing, the only individual sport available in the study, resulted in significantly higher Leaving Certificate scores than Rugby, Soccer and No Sport (p < .05), conferring an additional 73.4 point benefit over the next highest group, Rugby.

The sport provides great opportunities for all the boys who take part and to shut it down so simply after the significant progress it has made over the last few years is totally unacceptable.

There are few enough state schools offering a rowing programme and it would be a terrible shame to see this one go. There must be a good chance that alternative funding will be found so allowing the programme to continue for a year to secure alternative funding makes great sense.

There is no team sport like rowing. What a shame it would be for the boys to miss the opportunity in future.

For a school to be first class, it needs to offer first class opportunities and rowing is one of them.

I am an exteacher LOS teacher and I believe that such a school needs a rowing programme and support. It is not by chance that they have been so successful and that is down to the Rowing staff, pupils and parents. It is a huge part of what LOS is.

In this day and age it's important to introduce students to alternative possible future modes of life skills. Education is important but there is a way forward other than being a rocket scientist.

A shame. Whatever the sport, when decisions like this are made by people who solely base their decisions on financial reasons. There is proof that funds can be raised so let the rowing continue for 12 months such that further investigation can be made.
