Typo....I was the coordinator at Shawnee Mission Northwest. I typed in "Shawnee Mission" and I think it autocorrected to East. At any rate, my apologies for the error.

The IB program is really great for creative minds that want a different and more challenging aspect to learning.

As the former IB coordinator at Shawnee Mission East, I can attest to the value of the program. I understand the need to be financially prudent given the political climate in Kansas at the moment, but I also think that the benefits of IB will outweigh the advantages gained by cutting the program.

IB encourages students to be independent thinkers, engaged learners, and culturally aware leaders who show compassion for the world around them. We should be striving to make the extraordinary IB curriculum available to more schools and more students, not fewer. My older son is an IB diploma graduate and my younger son is in the program now. Their lives have been forever enriched by the IB experience.

Engaged, creative, critical thinkers like those who come out of SMSD's IB program are the very students we want to cultivate and support in our region. Cutting this program would be a grave error and miscalculation in judgement and long-term planning.

IB went above and beyond in preparing me for a college course load and in preparing me for a higher expectation for the quality of my work. I don't know if I would have been similarly prepared if I hadn't done IB. I think having the choice between a variety of different activities and programs in the SMSD is one of the greatest qualities of the school district and to limit students' ability to select how they appropriately challenge themselves in high school would be a mistake.

As a former teacher of IB, the program makes believers. Time and time again students told me all they had gained from the program.

The district has consistantly ignored transparency measures. The IB program is an incredible program that allows rigorous classes to challenge higher level students. We are asking for more time to make their decision and funding amounts to be public.

I am an IB Diploma Candidate, and this program is very valuable to the people whom are gifted with the opportunity to complete the courses. Please do not deny willing students of this program.

This unique program meets the needs of outstanding students. It would be a mistake to eliminate it.
