It's the "HOKIE" pokie... what more needs to be said. What's next, changing the colors of the team or getting rid of the gobbler because someone wants to hang a shingle on their career?

The Hokie Pokie is a special song that only can be played at VT footballs. I would suggest playing it after the 1st if you want to do something else before the 4th quarter.

I've been to a home game every year since 2004. I understand change is inevitable, but this is a tradition I looked forward to as an alumni and one that I had looked forward to sharing with my kids. The fact that there's no guarantee it'll be played when I come to visit some time this season makes me really sad. Tech football has been about winning, yes, but watching the Tuba players from both sides come together for the fans is a timeless tradition. Don't mess with this. :(

Class of '94, participant in the Guinness book record of the most people doing the Hokie Pokie at one time. Don't throw away tradition to look cool, tradition makes things cool.

In 1989, the MVs moved to the north end zone when there were no stands there....just scaffolding for the band. We were so removed from the rest of the stadium. It was Charlie Powell, a fellow Tuba, who suggested the idea to us and we took it to Dave McKee.....he instantly loved it! We gathered up the horns, and ran around thru the tunnel, ready to take the field at the end of the 3rd. It was a hit!!!! Unfortunately, back in the days before TV timeouts, we rarely got the whole song played because the break was barely a minute in length. But once games became regularly televised, it created all the time we needed to play the whole song and get everyone ready for the 4th. Your history lesson of the day.....Thank you Charlie Powell!!!!!
