When I was younger my grandparents lived out towards Potowautomi State Park! I have memories there, the Tower being one of them! Please don’t take something away with so many memories to it to so many people! It’s a treasure

Alteration Vs. Repair - The WI DNR is again blocking/stalling historic preservation efforts. Through the years, the DNR has acquired properties but has not provided for the necessary maintenance of the structures within their park system. Because of lack of timely maintenance/budgetary planning, the structure is now in need of major repairs. The DNR is using ADA requirements to block historic preservation efforts, citing that the appropriate maintenance repairs would be considered an alteration of the structure. However, back in 2012 when the tower was temporarily closed because of major crack was found in one of the main support beams, this was classified as a repair. The repair took about two years, because the park needed to find a living white oak tree big enough to replace the current beam. The prior work done in 2012 proves that what is required is a repair not an alteration. Why is the DNR's position changing? Who is responsible for the shift in policy? Or, did the DNR violate the ADA code in 2012?
Here is a description of the tower, a beautifully-crafted article, written by one of my favorite "Peninsula Pulse" authors, Jackson Parr on July 11, 2014.
"Driving through Potawatomi State Park garnered a different feel than the Peninsula State Park I am so used to up north. The roads were a bit more rustic and a bit more bent. There were slightly fewer lakeshore views, traded instead for deep woods scenery. Yet the most noticeable difference was the subtlety at which the 75-foot scenic tower stretched to the skyline through these deep woods. I expected this tower to provide a similar experience as Eagle Tower, which I have climbed every year since visiting the county twenty years ago. But, like everything else in the park, I was surprised with what I found.

This iconic tower can be restored and enjoyed for generations to come. We have been to a wonderful birding tower in 10,000 Islands which was built in 2010, 20 years after the ADA was passed. It is handicap accessible to the first level. They made it work. We would like to see the DNR make a decision that makes sense.

Beyond ridiculous to tear it down when there is a strong possibility it can be restored. Is it really better to allow no one use, than to have access for a large percent of the population? Can common sense prevail?

PLEASE do not repeat the Eagle Tower situation. Use the Oregon guy's product to reinforce the wood on Potawatomi Tower.
