Please SAVE the Historic Potawatomi Tower!
The Potawatomi Tower is a special place for so many visitors and county residents.
The tower is historically significant as it was the first observation tower built specifically for that purpose. Plus it has been nominated for the State and National Register of Historic Places.
The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society has been working with the DNR toward saving the landmark Tower in Potawatomi State Park.
We are asking DNR Secretary Preston Cole to please take the lead in saving this important icon by simply approving the emergency repairs and stabilization plan.
The report by Dr. Dan Tingley of Wood Research and Development has determined that the main supports to the tower can be saved and repaired.
But time is of the essence! These repairs must be done this fall before the winter winds and excessive snow loads do more harm to this neglected structure.

People are reaching out to me with offers of help I never could have imagined when I first hit publish on this page. Beyond ridiculous to tear it down when there is a strong possibility it can be restored. Is it really better to allow no one use, than to have access for a large percent of the population? Can common sense prevail?
This tower is a key component to Pot Park. It adds another fun element of adventure and scenery for visitors. It is the face of Pot Park, why would you not keep it?
The Tower in Potawatomi Park has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. The go to spot for out of town friends. Riding bikes to the tower and climbing it as kids. Checking out the fall colors. It’s an integral part of our community. Please save this treasure.
This is an iconic spot of my teenage hood. At age 16, I took my first boyfriend up the tower (and he was afraid of heights). His knees were knocking the whole climb up there. We shared our first kiss at the top.
This tower has personal history for me as the farm I grew up on was close to the park. Climbing the tower was something my family did often. As the tower was built in the early 1930s I strongly believe that my grandfather, William H. Moore, was one of the locals who supported building the tower. Let's repair and preserve this tower!

The ADA "like experience" reasoning is misguided here as other overlooks exist in the park with the same view - these can even be enhanced with cantilevered overlooks or accessible "belvederes" of their own off. Building a ramp to serve the few who need it, would impact the site surrounding the tower negatively and be a visual blight. RESTORE THIS LANDMARK!

This iconic tower can be restored and enjoyed for generations to come. We have been to a wonderful birding tower in 10,000 Islands which was built in 2010, 20 years after the ADA was passed. It is handicap accessible to the first level. They made it work. We would like to see the DNR make a decision that makes sense.
