The Salt Lake City District has made the unfortunate decision of entirely discontinuing the Guide Dogs and Small and Companion Animal Science CTE classes next year. The guide dog class has helped so many people- not just visually impaired people who end up having the dogs we help train, but also the students who put so much effort and dedication into the program the class offers. We would hate to see it go. In an effort to show our protest of this choice, we students are putting together a petition and an array of personal essays, to be submitted to people in the district. I'm a freshman at Highland High School and I was signed up and looking forward to this class. It's one of the only reasons I went to Highland. I'm willing to do anything to save this class. Thank you for doing this petition! <3
My guide dog Thumper had sisters in this club. My daughter raised a guide dog in high school and it was a great experience for her and our family. This is a wonderful opportunity forvstudents to have responsibility and to help someone in need.
I was part of the Guide dog program from 2013-2019. After graduating I became a certified professional dog trainer CPDT-KA & work for a local nonprofit training service dogs for veterans & first responders. I would not be a dog trainer today if it weren’t for this program.
The GDB Program taught me commitment and communication that no other class at school was able to teach me. I learned valuable, lifelong skills that I — as a, now, college student — still utilize today. This program is imperative to both students and Guide Dogs for the Blind.
I have a niece and nephew that have participated in this program, raising 3 different dogs. They learned responsibility, dedication, teaching skills, love and how to do hard things! It would be such a shame to cut this beautiful and rewarding program.
Loved the classes.
These classes are so important for all the reasons listed.

I am a blind person who is fortunate enough to be matched with one of the guides trained in this class, Michiko. Michiko is extraordinarily well trained and has perfect house behaviors. We are so happy to have her as a member of our family.
