My son went to withrow elementary and was lucky enough to get into gems (not his home school) he is now a 4.2 GPA student at temescal canyon high school also not his home school. Keep the gems program so gifted students can grow the way they need to! The teachers in the gems program are absolutely amazing!

My daughter immeasurably benefits from the GEMS program at EMS. The GEMS program cultivates and supports the skills, mindset of gifted students like her. I hope that this program receives the appropriate support and funding so that the future generations of gifted kids will continue to have the educational structure that they all deserve.

I'd like to share a little of our experience before and after the GEMS program.
When our son was in 1st and 2nd grade at Todd he came home each day happy and excited by things he had learned. The teachers were caring, professional and passionate about teaching. Life was good.
During the first semester of third grade his attitude suddenly changed. He didn't want to talk about school, became resistant to going and in fact on several occasions told us he "hated school". This was sudden, and obviously very alarming. At first we thought maybe it was a teacher, or bullying or maybe just a result of changes in his personality.
After some heart-to-heart discussions with him, my wife and I hit on the idea that he might just be bored. A reoccurring theme in our discussions with him was "they just keep repeating the same things over and over and over, a lot of the kids just aren’t getting it”.
We met with teachers and administration and to their credit they agreed we might be onto something. Although they didn't have an AP program at that age they offered to promote him to higher grade levels for math and a couple of other subjects. At the same time they began piloting their "Renzulli" program and selected our son to participate. This did wonders and he was soon back to being happy and excited by school. We were very pleased with this partnership with Todd. They went over and above, did everything they could and clearly cared, but it wasn't fully comprehensive and a bit of a band aid solution. Our son also struggled to make friends at the school due to being on this somewhat unique track.
When it came time for middle school (7th) we started thoroughly researching his in-district options and were concerned by the limited special programs. We considered home schooling and private.
During this time we were talking regularly with teachers and administrators at various schools, other parents and 7th grade school selection was a primary topic of conversation every day.

GEMS needs to be available to ALL students in our district including transfers. There’s no other middle school in our district that offers a program with a well-rounded, rigorous curriculum such as GEMS for our special gifted population.

DONT TAKE THE PROGRAM THAT MIGHT SAVE THESE KIDS FROM AN EXTRA YEAR OF COLLEGE, DROPPING OUT, OR WORSE. ALWAYS INVEST IN CHILDREN EARLY AND AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.

My step daughter went through the GEMS program from 2002-2005 and my daughter just finished up her first year. This program is amazing and would be a terrible loss to these kids. My step daughter went on to TCHS and flourished as a student and I’m hoping her sister will do the same. Please don’t take this from them.

I was in one of the first batch of GEMS classes offered at EMS. It definitely changed my life and opened up a world of opportunities that I wouldn’t have had without the program. I felt more prepared for high school with the program and it also helped me prepare for college. Please don’t get rid of this program as it will give other students opportunities they can not get anywhere else.

Save the GEMS program. Most of the school programs in this district fall short in comparison to other districts i've had contact with or been in myself. This cutting needs to stop, if there's a demand for it and it's beneficial for the kids then why is it even being considered for cancellation. Please just don't.

This program absolutely changed both of our children from not wanting to attend school and begging me to homeschooling them everyday to them having their backpacks on and racing out the door. Straight A's all the way through and it was a challenge and maintained their interest everyday. Our oldest is two years into the IB program at TCHS and loves it. Our second starts next year in the IB program. It s a bit of a fit with CNUSD to get the out of district release but it all worth it. I drive to Lake Elsinore each morning to drop them off amnd am thankful everyday. This program launches students and changes them forever making them the best they can be!
